This book chronicles the unforgettable account of one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. It is the story of Dave Pelzer, who was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother: a mother who played tortuous, unpredictable games--games that left him nearly dead. He had to learn how to play his mother's games in order to survive because she no longer considered him a son, but a slave; and no longer a boy, but an "it."

Dave's bed was an old army cot in the basement, and his clothes were torn and raunchy. When his mother allowed him the luxury of food, it was nothing more than spoiled scraps that even the dogs refused to eat. The outside world knew nothing of his living nightmare. He had nothing or no one to turn to, but his dreams kept him alive--dreams of someone taking care of him, loving him and calling him their son.

  • Sad

This is such a sad story. How can a mother treat her child, own flesh and blood, this way. He was just a little boy. The father was no better, he just walked away. I just can't believe that this is how it is in some people's homes. What a sheltered world some of us live in, including me. I don't know where this lady even thought up these ideas to do to her son. Who would even have thought of some of this. Some people are really wired wrong.
  • People can say....

To me, the root of all evil is not money or ignorance, or wickedness. It's not caring. People have said before, that this is life. My reply is that it doesn't have to be.

Although this a great book this is definitely missing pages and or chapters . I've read this book inside and out many times and there are things missing from each chapter on this app so I am highly disappointed. Wish I could get my money back .

This is such a sad, horrifying story. I read it because I had a student tell me about this book. She had been sexually abused. My heart breaks for all of these kids. A eye opening book.

  • Great Book

This book was amazing to read, it had emotion, a great amount of description, and many creative characters. It brings you anticipation to see the protagonist David finally stand up to his mother and survive in house where he is no more than a slave and an "it" nonexistent, to his mother and betrayed by his father as well as his brothers. This story brings a new perspective without a happy ending and a cold and dark tone and mood to the reader. It tells about the once perfect family that was shaped into a brutal mess. I recommend the second book as well. For sure get this book for it's amazing and vivid story the second book "a lost boy" I enjoyed but hoped for a different and more unique plot it was to sketchy and not a crowd pleaser to me I felt it should have been about a mother that saw her mistake in hurting and abusing david I hoped she would realize her mistakes. Anyways buy the books you won't regret it!
