When Life Seemed Its Worst, Gresham Awaited

Julia Hollis' opulent life in Victorian London crashes to pieces when her husband passes away. Worse, she is told by his bankers that he gambled away their fortune. Now, the family's hope rests on The Larkspur, an old abandoned coaching inn in the quaint village of Gresham.

Driven by dread and her desire to provide for her children, Julia decides to turn the dilapidated inn into a lodging house. But can she--who was accustomed to servants attending to every need--do what needs to be done and cope when boarders begin arriving? And then an eligible new vicar moves into town...

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! At first I was uncertain because the author starts out from the perspective of the main character for the first serval chapters then adds the perspective of other characters in the story. Always reverting back of course to the main character. Typically, this would annoy me but I found myself liking all of the characters so much that I not only didn't mind, but looked forward of seeing things from their prospective. This book is a feel good and inspirational book. If you are looking for a "Happy Ending" book this is the one for you.

I loved it. The period harkens back to when Christian values were so much more relevant to daily living. And the clothing! However uncomfortable, there was a clean modest way of dressing. And the redemptive theme was wonderful! Isn't this how we want to live and see people enjoy their blessings after spending time in the valleys?

What a sweet story. Spiritual but not over the top. Let's you fall for the characters enough that the tprayers seem a natural part of the dialogue. I'll read a sequel and you will too, when you finish Ms. Blackwell's novel. So many smiles!!
