Description

A woman of no importance, she manoeuvres in her restricted circumstances as her long-time love Captain Wentworth did in the wars. Even though she is nearly thirty, well past the sell-by bloom of youth, Austen makes her win out for herself and for others like herself, in a regenerated society.

This has the worst of Austen’s failings: everything happens inside the heroine’s head, there’s almost no conversation between the two principles, and after building and building to a desired end, when it comes, it’s delivered in summary, as if you were reading a blurb for a movie. She’s an author who goes under or around her fences, and that is limp, disappointing, and not endearing.

Perfectly Austen. Well worth the investment in time and money.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book, once I acquainted myself with the old English way of speaking.

I have so enjoyed this book. I love Jane Austen's writing. She develops characters who you come to know completely. She put them into situations that were fun to follow without the need for them to be vulgar, violent, or vicious.

The worst part of this book is coming to the end and having to say goodbye. All of Austin's characters become as old friends to me.
