Since its first publication in 1995, Lies My Teacher Told Me has gone on to win an American Book Award, the Oliver Cromwell Cox Award for Distinguished Anti-Racist Scholarship, and to sell over half a million copies in its various editions.

What started out as a survey of the twelve leading American history textbooks has ended up being what the San Francisco Chronicle calls “an extremely convincing plea for truth in education.” In Lies My Teacher Told Me, James W. Loewen brings history alive in all its complexity and ambiguity. Beginning with pre-Columbian history and ranging over characters and events as diverse as Reconstruction, Helen Keller, the first Thanksgiving, and the Mai Lai massacre, Loewen offers an eye-opening critique of existing textbooks, and a wonderful retelling of American history as it should—and could—be taught to American students.

This 10th anniversary edition features a handsome new cover and a new introduction by the author.

  • I'm not that far into it...

    By Felicia gcuuccuyfszffvbhbh
I'm not very far into the book yet, and I'm already so intrigued with it. I knew a little bit about the Wilson invasions. I just graduated from high school, and I feel this book needs to be in the class. More people should know this, and not just believe everything the school or government feeds them. Research. Good so far, looking forward to reading it throughout the summer
  • Should be required reading

Awakened my awareness of the fundamental difference between what is taught and what is truth.

At first I thought this book was going to be dull and boring but I was quite amazed to learn all these facts that I have never heard before I think this author makes American history interesting by explaining things and putting stuff out there. It's a really great book! :)

Waste of 12 dollars Author needs to get over his dislike of President Bush
  • This stuff should be taught to students

As a high school student, this surprised me as I learned how watered down and frosted our textbooks are. I'm not sure why they hide this from us, but they need to show us everything if they want us to grow an unbiased mind.
  • Great book

Simply one of the best books I have ever read. Will leave you stunned and with a lingering feeling of betrayal. You will learn that so much of what you thought to be true is utterly false. The fact that so many known falsehoods are taught to our children will make your stomach turn -- very upsetting.
